Editors' Reflections
2,000 Issues. 50,000 Readers. 170+Countries.
I gambled and clicked send at 8:14 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014. Issue number 1 of “Global Health eNews” went to a couple dozen folks in my office. Would anyone read it?
Now, with 2,000 issues and 50,000+ readers in 170 countries, I can definitively say yes. I enjoyed hunting for consequential and interesting global health news all by myself… for about 4 days. Then I realized I’d need more help.
Fortunately, I got a call from Dayna Kerecman Myers who wanted to join the GHN team. With her incomparable work ethic and that of others—especially Annalies Winny—GHN is still growing. This spring, we’ll be rolling out expanded content—thanks to 500+ readers—and a redesign of the newsletter and website.
Even though we’re celebrating 2,000, I’ve learned it’s not about the numbers. It’s people like you. Thanks for being one of the important people who are part of GHN.—Brian W. Simpson, editor-in-chief

In Global Health NOW’s early days, skeptics warned us that the number of people interested in reading a daily newsletter on serious, unglamorous health problems was probably pretty limited.
We’re so happy that our readers have proved them wrong. The stream of global health crises never seems to slow—but from our vantage point, interest, concern, and the search for solutions keeps growing, too.
GHN started off small, and by newsroom norms we’re still a small team—but it’s never felt that way because we have a whole community of contributors and supporters behind us. We couldn’t have done it without you, our lively, engaged readers around the world. Your tips, pitches, commentaries, suggestions, and feedback have made us stronger, brought attention and more resources to neglected global health stories around the world, and helped shape a more inclusive and expansive vision of global health. GHN Through a Reader's Eyes
It can be difficult to see GHN through a reader’s eyes when you’re part of making it happen each morning.
But for the past 2 months of maternity leave, I’ve had the privilege to shift from writer to reader, opening that trusty morning email and knowing our team has done the ‘heavy sifting’ on global health news so I don’t have to.
Seeing GHN from the outside made me prouder than ever to be part of a team that both distills the glut of news on the buzziest topics, and brings neglected issues to the surface. This week, I return to work with a renewed sense of purpose.—Annalies Winny, associate editor
